The Movie that took Tanna to the Oscars
The first-ever film shot entirely in Vanuatu tells an emotionally engaging story of forbidden love. The eternal story of young lovers breaking all the rules and risking everything to be together is beautifully told in “Tanna,” the first-ever feature shot entirely in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu.
Based on dramatic events that took place on the volcanic island of Tanna in 1987, the pic weaves fascinating details of tribal life into a universally accessible and emotionally affecting romantic drama. Very well performed by non-professionals drawn from communities whose history is represented on screen, “Tanna” marks a notable narrative debut for the experienced Aussie documaking duo of Bentley Dean and Martin Butler.
The movie was filmed on Tanna island in 2015, and shows the traditional living lifestyle of people from Yakel Village and also features one of the worlds active Volcano Mt Yasur which is one of the things that attracts many tourist to Vanuatu.
Highlights in the movie?
Again, the beauty of the island of Tanna is clear throughout the film. These beautiful locations are not just on Tanna but throughout Vanuatu. The landscape, the jungles and waterfalls really do look like they do in the movie. The movie is true to the Tanna traditions and custom. The dress, the language, and the lifestyle are all, as you would find in the traditional villages of Vanuatu.
